S. LIPKIN: "A Child When Grows -- Cries..."

"A Child When Grows -- Cries..."

(From Kaisyn Kuliev)
“A child when grows – cries” – It is a moral.
But when I hear, suddenly, child’s cry,
Such mighty pain embraces all my soul,
As if all mountains in mourning there lie.

Yes, I’ve remembered as the warfare’s woe
Was driving children through the burning miles,
It seems to me that Universe bemoans,
Just when I hear those children’s cries.

Translated by Yevgeny Bonver, June, 2001
