A. GELESKOOL: "I'll Not Return..."

"I'll Not Return..."

(From Juan Ramon Jimenez)
I’ll not return. And in darkness,
under the moon, so alone,
earth will be lulled by night, sightless,
singing waves’ songs in halftone.

Wind – in the home, left lone,
lost ev’n my shadow, breathless –
will seek my soul, and moan,
calling for soundless emptiness.

Who will recall me around? –
maybe, I’ll know it never;
God knows, who will be found
one which is sad in my favor.

But there will be stars and flowers,
gladness and sufferings, cruel,
and somewhere under green crowns,
born by a chance a love’s duel.

And a piano, the grievous,
sometimes will touch a night, softened,
only by me, the dark windows
ne’er will be thoughtfully opened.

Translated by Yevgeny Bonver, December, 2002
