ALEKSEY APUKHTIN: "I See You, My Dear, In Dreams..."

"I See You, My Dear, In Dreams..."

(From Heinrich Heine)
I see you, my dear, in dreams every night
In crowds of wonderful beings,
You smile at me, and to your heavenly sight,
I sob on my knees at my feelings.
You look very sadly and long strait at me,
And nod with your head, sweat and lustrous,
And out my eyes pours a tear by a tear,
And I murmur something that’s useless.
You whisper to me a soft word in response,
And give me a twig – very clear –
I wake up – your word’s irretrievably lost,
And your twig is not more here.

Translated by Yevgeny Bonver, March, 2001
