BORIS PASTERNAK: To Boris Pilnyak

To Boris Pilnyak

To love the others – a hard cross,
But you are fair, without doubt,
And to discern your beauty’s most,
Is to discern what’s life about.

In spring, they hear stir of dreams,
And whisper of the truth and message.
You’re deeply fundamental seemed,
Your essence – like the air – unselfish.

It’s simple to wake and start to see,
Get wordy junk your soul out,
And then to live and clear to be –
And that isn’t much to do about.

Translated by Yevgeny Bonver, May, 2001
