ZINAIDA GIPPIUS: "He Took Pine..."

"He Took Pine..."

1916
He took pine of the earthly road –
     First and unique one since;
Washed legs of them whoever roam –
     The Servant and the Prince.

He cried with us – The legal Master
     Of earth and sea, we view…
A king, a teacher, and a brother –
     And he’s a Jew.

Translated by Yevgeny Bonver, November, 2000
